Summary

The Health Survey for England (HSE) is used to estimate the proportion of people in England who have health conditions, and the prevalence of risk factors and behaviours associated with certain health conditions. The surveys provide regular information that cannot be obtained from other sources.


Key Facts

10% of adults reported currently using e-cigarettes in 2024.

11% of adults currently smoked cigarettes. 

27% of adults were classified as inactive, meaning that they participated in less than 30 minutes of moderate or vigorous activity a week.

46% of adults aged 16 and over had at least one longstanding illness or condition.

48% of adults had raised cholesterol.

9% of children aged 8 to 15 had ever tried an electronic cigarette.

2% of children this age had ever tried a cigarette, down from 19% in 1997. 

26% of adults reported chronic pain, defined as experiencing pain most days or every day within the last three months.

13% of adults reported chronic pain that interfered with their life or work activities most days or every day (defined as high impact chronic pain).

30% of adults were living with obesity while 66% were either overweight or living with obesity.

Overweight (including obesity) was more common among men (70%) than women (62%).
