Part of Request a data collection or information standard

Be clear on what you are requesting

Current Chapter

Current chapter – Be clear on what you are requesting

Before you submit a request, focus on what you are trying to achieve and why.

You should clearly describe:

  • the outcome you are looking to achieve
  • the problem you are trying to solve
  • whether this is something new or a change to an existing approach

You do not need to decide whether your request is a data collection or an information standard. The Assurance team will work with you to determine the most appropriate approach based on your request.

Start with the need

In some cases, what you need may already exist or could be met by updating an existing standard or data collection.

Before submitting your request, you should:

  • check whether a similar standard, or data collection already exists
  • consider whether your need could be met by extending or improving an existing approach

This helps avoid duplication and ensures the most effective use of existing data.

What your request should demonstrate

Your request should show:

  • a clear and defined need
  • how data or information will be used (for example, reporting, analysis or decision-making)
  • why existing data or standards do not fully meet this need
  • how this could improve outcomes, services or understanding

How this will be taken forward

Based on the information you provide, the Assurance team will:

  • help determine the most appropriate route (for example, an information standard or other mechanism)
  • advise on whether new data is required or whether existing data can be used
  • support you in developing your request further
