Request a data collection or information standard

Overview

Health and adult social care information standards set the rules for how information is processed and exchanged across the NHS and adult social care.

They ensure information is handled in a clear, consistent and reliable way, supporting accurate, secure and effective use of data for planning services and improving care.

These standards describe how systems interact, including the integration patterns commonly used across the NHS. They may reference the canonical data model, which defines the data attributes used within those interactions.

Data specifications are assured in line with the target data architecture and canonical data model. These are typically published as part of requirements for us to provide data often from the Secretary of State

Organisations may be monitored to check they are following these standards. If these standards are not considered:

  • enforcement action may need to be taken
  • private providers may face financial penalties

NHS organisations must comply with mandatory information standards as part of their provider licence.

Further changes may be introduced through the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025.
