About the data

Data Quality

Not all data fields are complete in the FGM Enhanced Dataset. Where data has a low level of completeness it is less reliable as the information we are presenting is based on a smaller amount of the overall data. The chart below shows data completeness by field.

Setting

88% of attendances when FGM is identified in a healthcare setting are in Midwifery and Obstetric services.

Age

The average age at attendance was 32 years. For people where FGM was undertaken under the age of 18 , it occurred at least 10 years ago in 98 per cent of cases.

Country

Where both values were known, 80% of women and girls were born and had FGM undertaken in an African country.

64% of cases undertaken in the UK are known to be piercings. Some of the remaining 36 per cent may also be piercings but the data is not complete.
