Incidence of all malignant cancers
Since 2013, NDRS has registered neoplasms in ICD-O3, the preferred and most up to date coding system for cancer. Many other national registries still code in ICD-10 however. Hence, for the purpose of comparison and for historical reasons, we present counts of ‘All malignant cancer’ defined both in terms of ICD-O3 coding and in terms of ICD-10 coding.
To enable international comparisons, this section concentrates on ‘All malignant cancers excluding NMSC defined using ICD-10 (ICD-10 C00* to C97 excluding C44*).
In 2023, there was an increase in the number of all cancers diagnosed in England, from 346,215 new diagnoses registered in 2022 to 354,820 new cancer diagnoses registered in 2023.
Between 2022 and 2023, the number of all cancers diagnosed in England increased by 4% for males (from 180,877 to 187,701) and 1% for females (from 165,338 to 167,119).
More cancers continue to be diagnosed and registered for males (187,701) than females (167,119).
These figures are displayed in Table 2 of the accompanying data release.
