Cancer Registration Statistics, England, 2023
National statistics, Accredited official statistics
Summary
This publication reports on newly diagnosed cancers registered in England during 2023. Information is supplied as: a summary report showing key findings; spreadsheet tables (counts and age-standardised rates); an interactive dashboard (counts, age-standardised rates, non-standardised rates and age-specific rates); and a methodology document.
Highlights
What is new?
- Incidence of cancer using National Disease Registration Service (NDRS) cancer groups (these incorporate both the location and type of cancer) by combinations of gender, age group, and stage at diagnosis (where appropriate) for England, 2023
- Incidence and mortality of cancer (using ICD-10 3-digit codes) by gender and age group for England, 2023
Upcoming statistics
At the time of publication, we were unable to publish breakdowns by sub-national geographies and deprivation due to small area population statistics for 2023 being unavailable. Once these populations are available, we will update the interactive dashboard with the following:
- Incidence of cancer using NDRS cancer groups by combinations of gender, age group, deprivation, and stage at diagnosis (where appropriate) for former Government office regions, Cancer alliances and Integrated care boards
- Incidence of cancer using NDRS cancer groups by combinations of gender and age group (where appropriate), for Upper tier local authorities (UTLA), Local Authority/unitary authority (LAUA) and Middle layer super output areas (MSOA)
- Incidence and mortality (using ICD-10 3-digit codes) by gender and age group for former Government office regions, Cancer alliances and Integrated care boards
We expect to publish these breakdowns in early 2026, please sign up to our newsletter for further updates and exact timeframes for publication.
NDRS User Research Opportunities
We are always looking for opportunities to embed user led approaches in our work and to continually assess and improve the service based on user feedback. Find out more about the NDRS User-Centred Design (UCD) principles on our website.
If you would like to provide feedback on the Cancer Registrations Statistics publication please fill out our short online questionnaire.

Excluding basal cell carcinoma and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of skin, half of all registered cancer diagnoses (50%) continue to be found in the 4 most common main cancer groups: prostate, breast, lung, or bowel.
Prostate cancer was the most diagnosed cancer in 2023, with 58,137 new diagnoses, which is 6% more registrations than in 2022.
