Standards you should meet on senior leadership and ownership of networks and connectivity.
7.1 NHS organisations should have senior leadership team responsibility for Networks and Connectivity
Importance of meeting the standard
Having clearly defined roles and responsibilities and an owner will help focus the organisation's network and connectivity strategy. Without this focus, there’s a risk that:
- the use of network technology will only meet short-term needs and could lead to additional unplanned costs
- new digital technology will not be compatible or interoperable with existing infrastructure and equipment
When to meet the standard
You should meet this standard when
- carrying out your first assessment against Networks and Connectivity standards
- the assigned senior leadership team (SLT) lead leaves the organisation or changes roles
- organisational changes result in changes in SLT responsibilities
How to meet the standard
NHS organisations should assign a member of their SLT to
- have strategic oversight of networks and connectivity and how it fits with wider digital strategies
- ensure the organisation's position against the NHS England Network and Connectivity standards is reviewed annually
- create and manage a networks and connectivity strategy led by the needs of staff and patients
- ensure networks and connectivity requirements are included in disaster recovery and business continuity plans
- regularly review and update all relevant strategies and plans
