NHS Sickness Absence Rates, July 2025


Following the successful production of data using new data processing methods, we will be moving to publishing data 12 weeks after period end as opposed to the current 16 weeks after period end. The next publication on 8 January 2026 will include data for both the August 2025 and September 2025 data months. 

From 29 January 2026 (October 2025 data month) onwards data will be published each month, 12 weeks after period end.

Summary

This report shows monthly sickness absence rates of NHS Hospital and Community Health Services (HCHS) staff working in NHS Trusts and other core organisations and NHS Support Organisations and Central Bodies. Data is presented by NHS England region, ICS area, organisation, organisation type, staff group and reason for sickness absence.

Key Facts

NHS Absence rates in July 2025

The overall sickness absence rate for England was 5.1%. This has increased slightly since June 2025 (4.9%) but is slightly lower than July 2024 (5.2%).

Regional and organisational type variation

The North West region reported the highest sickness absence rate in July 2025 at 6.0%, rising slightly since June 2025 (5.8%).

The South East of England reported the lowest sickness absence rate in July 2025 at 4.5%, increasing slightly since June 2025 (4.3%).

 

Ambulance Trusts had the highest sickness absence rate at 6.6% in July 2025, increasing slightly since June 2025 (6.3%). Commissioning Support Units had the lowest sickness absence rate at 3.0%, decreasing slightly since June 2025 (3.1%).

Staff group differences

Support to ambulance staff reported the highest sickness absence rate in June 2025 at 7.9%, increasing slightly since June 2025 (7.6%).

 

HCHS doctors reported the lowest sickness absence rate in July 2025 at 1.9%.

Reason for sickness absence

Anxiety/stress/depression/other psychiatric illnesses was the most reported reason for sickness, accounting for over 694,800 full time equivalent days lost and 30.3% of all sickness absence in July 2025. This has increased since June 2025 (29.1%).
