This represents a 5.2% increase in both FCEs and FAEs compared to 2023-24.

The chart below shows the trend of FCEs and FAEs, including the impact of COVID-19, since 2020-21.

Day case and ordinary episodes, 2015-16 to 2024-25

In 2024-25, 61.6% of episodes were ordinary episodes involving a planned overnight stay, and 38.4% were day cases.

Admission method by IMD decile, 2024-25

As shown in the chart, emergency admissions were more common for the more deprived deciles.

FCEs by age and sex, 2024-25

The age group with the highest number of episodes was the 75-79 year group (2.3 million).

Female patients accounted for 12.3 million, or 54.8%, of episodes.

Episodes for females aged 20-39 years were nearly 3 times those of males in the same age groups. Maternity services are responsible for a large proportion of admitted patient care for females in these age groups.
