Circumstances

In the year ending 31 March 2019:

  • At the time of death, 62% of the children in ‘Other private residence’ had their deaths assessed as having modifiable factors.
  • Over a third of all child deaths were due to a neonatal event. Apparent homicide and fire and burns were the most common event that led to a child's death that had modifiable factors (both at 78%).

  • Deaths categorised as ‘Deliberately inflicted injury, abuse or neglect’ had the highest proportion (84%) of deaths identified as having modifiable factors whilst ‘Malignancy’ had the least proportion (6%).
