Overall screening activity and cancers detected
Screening activity
Women may be invited to attend screening by the NHS Breast Screening Programme or may attend as a result of self or GP referral. In total 2.14 million women aged 45 and over were screened within the programme in 2017-18. This compares with 2.20 million in 2016-17 and represents a decrease of 2.8%. See Table D.

Cancers detected
A total of 18,001 women aged 45 and over had cancers detected by the screening programme in 2017-18, a rate of 8.4 cases per 1,000 women screened. This compares with 18,402 women with cancers detected in 2016-17 (a rate of 8.4 cases per 1,000 women screened) and 14,110 women with cancers detected in 2007-08 (a rate of 8.2 cases per 1,000 women screened)2.
