Endometrial Cancer Audit Pilot (ECAP)

This is a jointly funded partnership project with the British Gynaecological Cancer Society, the British Association of Gynaecological Pathologists, and The Eve Appeal and Peaches Womb Cancer Trust.

Introduction

The Endometrial Cancer Audit Pilot (ECAP) was established with the aim of exploring the feasibility of a national clinical audit in endometrial cancer using information that is routinely submitted by gynae-oncology teams across England. These submissions form the monthly flow of data into the Cancer Outcomes and Services Dataset (COSD), as well as other linked data that is already collected including Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy dataset (SACT), Radiotherapy Data Set (RTDS) and Hospital Episode Statistics (HES).

Whilst the pilot only included English data, the partner organisations are working towards facilitation of similar data analyses by cancer registration services in the devolved UK nations.

The pilot was a joint project funded by the following partner organisations, with analytical support from NHS England’s National Disease Registration Service and Health Data Insight CIC:

  • The British Gynaecological Cancer Society (BGCS): a society of professionals dedicated to improving the care provided to patients with gynaecological cancers. The BGCS formulates and delivers policy on gynaecological cancer research, prevention, diagnosis and treatment in the United Kingdom. Members include medical practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and other allied professionals including scientists who have an interest in gynaecological cancers.
  • The British Association of Gynaecological Pathologists (BAGP): the UK’s professional body for specialists in gynaecological pathology, dedicated to advancing women’s health through improved diagnosis, education, research, and professional practice.
  • The Eve Appeal: The Eve Appeal is the leading gynaecological cancer charity. To help save lives, they focus on preventing and improving the early diagnosis of womb, ovarian, cervical, vulval and vaginal cancer.
  • Peaches Womb Cancer Trust: Peaches Womb Cancer Trust is the UK's foremost womb cancer charity and actively works to improve the lives of everyone affected by womb cancer. They achieve this through raising awareness, supporting and advocating for patients, funding and promoting crucial research.

The work done as part of the ECAP was in partnership with the following organisations:

Acknowledgement

This work uses data that has been provided by patients and collected by the NHS as part of their care and support. The data are collated, maintained and quality assured by the National Disease Registration Service, which is part of NHS England.

Methodology

Building on the Ovarian Cancer Audit Feasibility Pilot (OCAFP), the ECAP ran for two years and delivered meaningful analysis of routinely collected data. This work generated a range of outputs which could be used to support improvements in treatment and outcomes for women diagnosed with endometrial cancer in England.

Instead of collecting new data the analyses by linking existing databases which capture clinical data on cancer and its treatment in routine day-to-day practice in NHS hospitals in England. Data sources include the Cancer Outcomes and Services Dataset (COSD) which captures details of all cancers diagnosed in England, including pathology details and key clinical indicators such as disease stage.

The quality and subsequent success of the project was therefore dependent on the level of completeness and accuracy of the data captured in these data sets. Information on data completeness is available to providers via the CancerStats2 portal*. (This opens in a new window). Trust-level findings on endometrial cancer incidence, mortality and survival are also available via this portal.

*Please note that this platform requires an N3/HSCN secure network connection and password access which can be authorised for relevant NHS staff by provider trust cancer management teams
