Highlights
The second report from the Endometrial Cancer Audit Pilot was published in January 2026.
This report summarised the cancer treatments received by women diagnosed with endometrial cancer in England between 2017 and 2019.
It counted how many had records of different treatments: hysterectomy (removal of the womb), chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or combinations of these. It also explored whether routine health records could be used to report how many women had their lymph nodes checked for signs of cancer spread, and how many received hormone (endocrine) therapy as part of their care.
Key Findings:
- Use of hysterectomy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy varied by patient characteristics and the features of the cancer. Some regional variation was also seen, particularly for hysterectomy and chemotherapy, even after accounting for differences in patient populations.
- Among women who had hysterectomy, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy recorded, there was variation in:
- the type of hysterectomy surgery used,
- whether chemotherapy was given before or after hysterectomy,
- the type of radiotherapy (external beam or brachytherapy), and
- which combinations of treatments women received
- Records of procedures used to identify lymph-node treatment or assessment were lower than expected. However, an examination of data from more recent years (up to 2022) suggests that recording has improved over time.
- Records of hormone (endocrine) therapy in routine primary and secondary care data were lower than expected.
Methodology
This Treatment Report is the second in a series of analyses produced during the two-year project. It provides detailed information on patterns of cancer treatment for women diagnosed with endometrial cancer in England.
The analyses did not involve collecting new data. Instead they linked together existing databases which capture clinical data on cancer and its treatment in routine day-to-day practice in NHS hospitals in England. The Cancer Outcomes and Services Dataset (COSD) includes information on every cancer diagnosed in NHS organisations, such as pathology details and key clinical details like stage at diagnosis. Treatment information was taken from several routine sources, including Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES) for inpatient and outpatient care, the treatment table of the National Cancer Registration Dataset (NCRD), the Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy dataset (SACT), the National Radiotherapy Dataset (RTDS), the Primary Care Prescription Database (PCPD).
Overall, this report provides a comprehensive review of the main treatment types used for endometrial cancer. It aims to support comparison with other countries and to enable identification of regional differences in care which may help improve clinical practice and outcomes in due course. The findings presented in this report can be downloaded below.
Trust-level findings are also available to providers through the CancerStats2 portal.* (This opens in a new window).
*Please note that this platform requires an N3/HSCN secure network connection and password access which can be authorised for relevant NHS staff by provider trust cancer management teams.
