Summary
The Breast and Cosmetic Implant Registry (BCIR) records the details of any individual who has undergone breast implant surgery, so that they can be traced in the event of a product recall or other safety concern relating to a specific type of implant. Data collection started in England in late 2016, in Scotland in 2019 and in Northern Ireland in 2021.
The purpose of this report is to provide information on the uptake of the registry. It does not provide a comprehensive view of the number of breast implant operations undertaken. It provides an overview of the data collected between January and December 2024 and includes some historical data from the start of the registry in 2016. Information in this report represents data that was was extracted from the registry on 26 August 2025.

Key Facts
BCIR Patients: England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, January to December 2024
In 2024, 17,215 patients underwent 17,765 operations at 345 organisations (NHS and independent providers.
BCIR Data Collection: 2017 to 2024
Since January 2017, BCIR data has been submitted by 390 organisations in England, 18 in Scotland, and 7 in Northern Ireland.
BCIR Operations: England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, January to December 2024
17,765 operations undertaken between January and December 2024 were reported to the registry – 16,795 in England, 820 in Scotland and 150 in Northern Ireland.
