Summary Report - Episodes

Finished Consultant Episodes (FCEs) and Finished Admission Episodes (FAEs)

16.2 million FCEs and 12.8 million FAEs were recorded in 2020-21.

This represents a 22.7 per cent decrease in FCEs from 2019-20 . The decrease in FAEs is larger at 25.5 per cent.

The drop in activity seen in 2020-21 coincides with the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and the first lockdown which began in March 2020.

Day case and ordinary episodes, 2011-12 to 2020-21

In 2020-21 70.5 per cent of episodes were ordinary episodes involving a planned overnight stay and 29.5 per cent were day cases.

The proportion of day case episodes has fallen for the first time in over 10 years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, some routine day case activities were cancelled.
