7.1 Covid-19 SNOMED Codes

Certain SNOMED codes indicate a value associated to the record and cannot by themselves indicate the type of event. For example, a SNOMED code might represent a measurement of patient height. In that case the height measurement is stored alongside the SNOMED code. These are called observable entity codes. The value of such codes can change the interpretation of the code. For example, a test result with value 0 may indicate that test is negative. In the current analysis events with such SNOMED codes are classed as potential COVID-19 infection. An investigation found only 0.3% of codes in the data are observable entity codes, of which 98% had no associated value. These codes were not considered further due to their small prevalence, and the even smaller prevalence of associated values.

7.2 Hardware

The analysis is done on the Data Processing Services (DPS) platform supplied by NHS Digital. It is a cloud based data warehouse and distributed computing framework, using Apache Hive and Apace Spark. Front-end interfaces such as Databricks and Tableau are provided through a virtual access window called the Data Access Environment (DAE). The platform is hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
