2024-25 Publication Information

The 2024-25 Cervical Screening Programme Annual Statistical Bulletin is delayed whilst we transition the reporting of data from Open Exeter to the Cervical Screening Management System. The bulletin will be published as soon as possible following completion of this work.

Amendment to Section 3, Colposcopy; Outcomes of Colposcopy Treatment

This section has been amended to correct the stated percentages of diagnostic and treatment biopsies.

The amendment is only to the percentages in the section text, the data table did not require amendment.

Summary

People between the ages of 25 and 64 are invited for regular cervical screening under the NHS Cervical Screening Programme. This is intended to detect abnormalities within the cervix that could, if undetected and untreated, develop into cervical cancer.

This statistical report covers the NHS Cervical Screening Programme for England in 2023-2024. It includes data on the call and recall system, on screening samples examined by pathology laboratories and on subsequent referrals to colposcopy clinics.


Highlights

68.8% of eligible individuals aged 25 to 64 adequately screened

(Coverage assessed at 31 March 2024)

A 0.1 percentage point increase on the previous year, when coverage was 68.7%.

5.12 million individuals aged 25 to 64 invited for screening

(Invitation letters sent during 2023-24, excludes reminders)

An increase of 10.7% on the previous year, when 4.62 million were invited. 

3.25 million individuals aged 25 to 64 tested

(Tested in 2023-24)

A decrease of 5.3% on the previous year, when 3.43 million were tested.


251,251 referrals to colposcopy in 2023-24

(All ages, all referral reasons)

An increase of 1.8% from the previous year, when 246,762 were referred.
