Our response

In response to a request from the Department of Health and Social Care for emergency admissions data, by local authority, provider and Integrated Care Board (ICB) for adults and patients aged 65+, to support delivery of the Better Care Fund (BCF).

We have provided:

A count of non-elective inpatient spells at English hospitals occurring between 1 April 2020 and 31 January 2026 with a length of stay of at least 1 day, for specific acute treatment functions and patients aged 18+ and 65+, broken down into the following files:

i) total spells,

ii) spells for patients admitted due to a fall,

iii) spells for patients admitted for an Ambulatory Care Sensitive Condition (ACSC), and

iv) spells for patients discharged to their Usual Place of Residence (UPOR).

All files contain tables for the following sub-national breakdowns:

i) upper-tier local authority of residence,

ii) hospital provider,

iii) ICB of residence, and

iv) ICB of treatment.

Mid-year population estimates, published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) are also included in the local authority and ICB of residence tables.
