Length of stay in mental health hospitals by ICB

As at 31 December 2025, for each integrated care board (ICB), the longest single continuous stay in hospital (ongoing or concluded in the past 5 years), number and percentage of current patients with lengths of stay exceeding 5, 10, 15 and 20 years, and average length of stay of current patients.

Request received

We were asked to provide, using Assuring Transformation (AT), for each ICB:

  • the longest single stay (ongoing or concluded in the past 5 years) rounded to whole years
  • the count and percentage of current patients with lengths of stay exceeding 5, 10, 15 and 20 years
  • the average length of stay for patients with a learning disability and autistic patients without a learning disability

Our response

We provided, using Assuring Transformation (AT), for each ICB:

  • The longest length of continuous stay in hospital for either a current patient as at 31 December 2025 or a patient discharged between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2025
  • The number and percentage of current patients as at 31 December 2025 with a length of stay exceeding 5, 10, 15 and 20 years
  • The mean and median length of stay for current patients as at 31 December 2025 - for patients with a learning disability (with or without autism) and patients with autism only
