Mergers and acquisitions

Proposed changes are those which ODS has been informed are due to take place by local, affected organisations and/or NHS England, but which are not yet formally approved. As such, the details of any proposed changes are subject to change, delay or cancellation. We advise that ODS data users periodically check this webpage for further updates.

Legally effective changes are those which have been formally approved, either by issue of a parliamentary Statutory Instrument or an NHS England approved Grant of Acquisition or Merger. As such, these changes have been reflected within ODS published data.

Formally approved name changes for statutory organisations which have occurred in the last 12 months are also detailed below. For anything prior to this please refer to the succ.csv file.

Upcoming reconfiguration activity

If you are due to undergo any upcoming reconfiguration activity, please contact ODS via the National IT Customer Service Portal’ 

To submit a request to ODS you will need to:

1. Log into the NHS National IT Customer Support Portal.
2. Select 'Submit a Case'.
3. From the categorises listed on the left-hand side of the screen, select 'Data Services, Collections & Data sets'.
4. Select the subcategory 'Organisation Data Service (ODS)'.
5. Select the ODS form you require.

New portal users will be prompted to create an account.

The merger of NHS England, including NHS Digital from January 2023, and Health Education England from April 2023, created a new NHS England.

As a result of the merger, the 3 separate ODS codes for the former organisations remain active but with some renaming as described in the table below.

A further options analysis and impact assessment is required within NHS England to determine the long-term future of these codes. Until this is complete all 3 codes will remain legally and operationally active in ODS data.
