Communication request version added to provider worklist
We are making enhancements to the provider worklist in the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS) API.
1. What we're doing and why
From 13 February 2026 (subject to final testing), we will return the request version as part of the providers Advice and Guidance (A&G) worklist.
Partners find out about new and on-going A&G requests in their organisation by using the Retrieve advice and guidance requests worklist (A023) API endpoint. For in-flight requests, partners need to keep their data up to date. They currently check for changes by calling Retrieve advice and guidance request summary (A024).
Constantly checking versions through additional API calls can be costly for partner systems, especially when there are many requests. This results in unnecessary system load and network traffic.
Note: A change in the version indicates that something about the A&G request has changed. The version may change for several reasons — not just clinical or admin updates, but also due to internal e-RS processes.
2. What this means for your solution
The Retrieve advice and guidance requests worklist (A023) endpoint response will now include the request version.
This:
-
is an additive change — no existing functionality is being removed or altered
-
only applies to the providers 'Advice and guidance' worklist
The request version (communicationRequestVersion) will be added to the existing worklist item extension.
With the request version now included in the worklist, partner systems can easily identify changes to A&G requests without making extra API calls.
This helps your solution stay faster, more efficient, and reduces unnecessary system load.
3. What you need to do
This is not a breaking change. However, we recommend that partners:
- ensure your software is able to accommodate the additional information
- update your processes to improve efficiency
- test your software to make sure you are not impacted
The change will be available in the INT environment from 28 January 2026 and will be released to production on 13 February 2026, subject to successful testing.
