How DARS engages with patients and the public
The NHS England Data Access Request Service (DARS) helps people and organisations safely and legally use approved health data sets, so it can be used for public benefit.
NHS England is committed to making sure that decisions about access to health data are open, transparent, and informed by the public.
The Data Access Request Service (DARS) supports the safe and legal use of NHS health data so it can be used to improve health and care. Listening to patients and the public helps us understand concerns, build trust, and make better decisions about how data is used.
We involve patients and members of the public in a range of ways so their views can help shape how NHS data is accessed and used for the benefit of everyone.
Our engagement activities
We involve patients and the public in the data access process in a number of ways, see below. Their views and experiences help us understand what matters most to people and guide how decisions about NHS data are made.
These activities help us make better decisions and continually improve how we review and manage requests to access NHS data.
- surveys: online questionnaires to gather feedback on data use and priorities
- focus groups: In depth discussions with members of the public to explore concerns and ideas
- co-development and co-design with public groups and forums
- engagement with national charities and other voluntary sector groups
- public and patient voice partners involvement in working groups and meetings by members of the public
What we’ve done as a result of public engagement and involvement
Your feedback has led to meaningful changes in how NHS England handles data access:
- improved transparency: update of data uses register to provide clearer information on who can access NHS data and why
We will continue to review and adapt our processes based on what you tell us.
