What is a Care Identity profile?

Who might need a Care Identity profile, what you can use it to access, and how to get one.

What a Care Identity profile is

A Care Identity profile is an online record you hold that:

  • includes some information about you that proves who you are, such as your name and email address
  • controls what services you're allowed to log in to, to access patient information and clinical data

To access patient information securely, clinical staff need:

  • a Care Identity profile
  • access positions assigned to that profile by a Registration Authority
  • an authenticator - a device they use to log in

If you have a smartcard or other authenticator that you use to log in to NHS services, you already have a Care Identity profile.

Who needs a Care Identity profile

You need a profile for access to:

  • patient information, through systems like the National Care Records Service (NCRS)
  • non-patient data systems like Service Finder

How to get a Care Identity profile

If you only need access to NHS Service Finder

You can create your own profile. A self-created profile is unverified, which means you will not have access to services like NCRS.

If you need access to other services

You'll need a profile created for you by a Registration Authority user. These users manage verified Care Identity profiles through an application called Care Identity Management.

Read more on how to find your Registration Authority. Some organisations provide Registration Authority contact details here.

If your organisation does not have a Registration Authority, you'll need to contact your HR team to discuss your options.
