This report summarises the findings of a one-off survey carried out at the end of 2004. Information was collected about the provision of childcare support for NHS staff. The survey questionnaire was sent out to 571 NHS organisations including Acute & Specialist Acute Trusts, Primary Care Trusts, Mental Health Trusts and Ambulance Trusts. Each was asked various questions about the level of childcare provision for staff as at 30th September 2004. 90% of these organisations responded to the survey. The statistical publication takes the form of a report published on the Department of Health website.

Highlights
- The key results findings of this survey were as follows:
- Almost all (97%) of the organisations had access to a childcare co-ordinator.
- Approximately 11,700 nursery places for under 5 year olds were available to NHS staff in the organisations surveyed.
- Over half (56%) of the organisations surveyed provided nursery places for their staff. Of these over three quarters (76%) subsidised their nursery places in some way.
- 69% of the nurseries were open for 11 hours or more on weekdays, but only 4% were open during the weekend.
- Two-thirds (66%) of organisations gave staff the opportunity to purchase childcare vouchers, which allow staff to save on tax and national insurance contributions. 61% of the organisations that did not provide childcare vouchers intended to make them available to staff by the end of 2005.
- Over three quarters (78%) of organisations intended to extend their existing provision of childcare support. Of these 38% hoped to make more nursery places available to their staff in the medium to long term.
- 84% of the organisations surveyed reported that their staff had access to holiday play schemes. Staff in over three quarters (78%) of organisations surveyed had access to a childminding networks and 56% had access to after school clubs.
