Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Risk Assessment Quarterly Publication Revisions

Summary

The data collection was first made mandatory from June 2010 and data has been published quarterly from the first full quarter’s data (July to September 2010). From April 2019 there will be a change to the data collection to include 16 and 17 year old patients.

The data collection asks for 3 items of information:

Number of patients aged 16 and over admitted in the month who have been risk assessed for VTE on admission to hospital using the criteria in a National VTE Risk Assessment Tool. Total number of patients aged 16 and over admitted in the month. Calculated from (1) and (2), the percentage of patients aged 16 and over, admitted within the month assessed for risk of VTE on admission. For the purposes of this collection, risk assessment should be completed on inpatients within 14 hours of admission; NICE guidelines state that where required, pharmacological thromboprophylaxis should be started within 14 hours of admission, therefore risk assessment should be completed prior to this, unless otherwise stated in the population-specific recommendations.
