For a patient requiring long-term haemodialysis (HD) for established renal failure, vascular access is a crucial aspect of the therapy. Vascular access (VA) is required to remove and return blood to the patient, passing the blood through an artificial kidney or flter. Most patients have their treatment three times a week for four hours or more.
