Release of the Young Type 2 Detailed Analysis File

The Young People with Type 2 Diabetes Detailed Analysis File has been released

Summary

The Young People with Type 2 Diabetes audit aims to document the number of people with type 2 diabetes up to the age of 40 years, their patient characteristics and the diabetes care they receive. This is important because adverse diabetes and cardiovascular outcomes are more common in people who develop type 2 diabetes at an earlier age and it is thought the numbers of affected individuals are increasing.

For this release the cohort was split into the following age groups for certain analyses: ’less than or equal to 18 years’, ’19 to 25 years’ and ’26 to 39 years’ to reflect childhood and the early stages of adulthood. These age groups were compared to ‘40 to 59 years’ and ‘60 to 79 years’ age groups to understand trends across all ages. This release reports on data collected for people in the 2023-24 audit year. Data are submitted by services in England and Wales.

The data files which support the dashboard can be downloaded from the 'Resources' section of this page. These data files include the measures presented in the dashboard, split by national, regional, ICB/LHB and PCN level.

Disclosure control has been applied to mitigate the risk of patient identification. Zeros are reported, and all numbers are rounded to the nearest 5, unless the number is 1 to 7, in which case it is rounded to 5. This allows for more granular data to be made available. Rounded numbers are used to calculate percentages therefore numbers may not sum as expected. Percentages are not calculated where the rounded denominator is 20 or less, and where numbers are small percentages are volatile and should be treated with caution.

Please note: Chinese ethnicity is grouped under "Asian" in the NDA, but "Other" in the NPDA. This misalignment affects a small number of patients who are classified as "Other" ethnicity when they should be classified as "Asian". This will be corrected in future releases of the Young People with Type 2 report.

Highlights

Key Facts

There are now 164,360 people living with type 2 diabetes under 40 years of age and this number continues to rise faster than those living with the condition at older ages.

About a quarter of children and adolescents in England under the age of 18 years with type 2 diabetes remain under the care of primary care.

It is important that all children and adolescents with type 2 diabetes are referred to specialist services.

Compared with people aged 40 years and over who have type 2 diabetes, young people with type 2 diabetes are less likely to receive diabetes care processes.

Young people with type 2 diabetes are less likely to be on SGLT-2 inhibitor treatment compared to older age groups.

SGLT2 inhibitors are a useful and effective treatment for young adults with type 2 diabetes unless contraindicated.
