For 2005/06 and 2006/07, this indicator measures the number of persons admitted to hospital for alcohol specific conditions (e.g. alcoholic liver disease, or acute alcohol intoxication). For 2007/08 onwards, this indicator uses a proportion of all admissions from conditions known to be wholly or partially attributable to alcohol. For 2005/06 and 2006/07 - Alcohol specific hospital admissions, directly age standardised rate, all ages, 2005/06, persons. For 2007/08 onwards – Hospital admissions for alcohol related harm, directly age and sex standardised per 100,000 European standard population.
The Government is committed to reducing the harm caused by alcohol and drugs, as set out in the PSA 25 Delivery Agreement. The measurable indicator as specified in the PSA 25 is the rate of hospital admissions for alcohol related harm per 100,000 population. The acute or long term effects of excessive alcohol consumption are a major cause of avoidable hospital admissions, and this indicator will help monitor the likely healthcare burden.
