Video surveillance systems in health and care
This brief guidance helps information governance (IG) professionals understand what IG processes they need to follow before they deploy video surveillance systems on their indoor or outdoor premises.
Video surveillance systems
Video surveillance systems are networks of cameras, recording devices, and software that view or record individuals and information in specific locations for security and safety purposes. Examples include a hospital using Automatic Number Plate Registration (ANPR) to manage parking facilities, or a care home using Closed Circuit TV (CCTV) within their public spaces.
Things to do before deployment
These systems can intrude on people’s privacy, so you must complete a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) before you deploy any video surveillance systems.
You must also make an effort to inform those people whose images or information may be captured by such systems. This means you need to update your privacy notices, and display posters in prominent places informing people of the use of video surveillance.
These IG pages provide clear and consistent IG advice and guidance to patients and service users, health and care staff and IG professionals. NHS England convenes a working group to check and challenge the guidance.
