Summary Care Record and the national data opt out
Brief guidance to help Information Governance (IG) professionals to understand more about the Summary Care Record (SCR) and the national data opt out.
The national data-opt out does not apply to Summary Care Records. It only applies to a person’s confidential patient information when used for purposes other than individual care, such as planning and research.
The Summary Care Record (SCR) provides the basic health and care information needed to give individual care when the person’s full record is not available. For example, to give emergency treatment when a person is on holiday in another part of the country.
As the SCR exists to support individual care, the national data opt-out does not apply. A different opt-out process is available to those who do not want to have an SCR.
These IG pages provide clear and consistent IG advice and guidance to patients and service users, health and care staff and IG professionals. NHS England convenes a working group to check and challenge the guidance.
