Diagnostic Imaging Data Set (DIDS) implementation tools and guidance

Tools and guidance to help care service providers and system suppliers implement the Diagnostic Imaging Data Set (DIDS).

DIDS v1.0

Read the supporting information about DIDS v1.0 including how to submit data.

DIDS v2.0

DIDS v2.0 is being implemented with the following timelines:

Local collection of data 1 April 2026

National collection of data 1 May 2026

Learn more about the submission dates for DIDS v1.0 and DIDS v2.0.

DIDS v2.0 Technical Output Specification (TOS)

The DIDS v2.0 TOS includes the data items and their definitions in DIDS v2.0

DIDS v2.0 Enhanced Technical Output Specification (ETOS)

The ETOS shows the data items collected, their definitions and the validations which will take place when DIDS v2.0 data is received by NHS England.

It includes the validations which would result in a rejection of the file or a warning on the data submitted.

For more information see the worksheets ‘Validations – Data Items’ and ‘Additional File-Level Rejects’).

The ETOS should be read in conjunction with the DIDS User Guidance, DIDS Data Model and DIDS Mapping Guidance.

It is likely to be most relevant to the providers of imaging services and system suppliers to help understand the validations in DIDS v2.0.

DIDS v1.0 to v2.0 mapping guidance

This guidance compares v1.0 to v2.0 of the DIDS data set to show what changes have been made as part of the v2.0 update.

It provides a high level comparison of the data groups and data items in v1.0 and v2.0 of the Diagnostic Imaging Data Set to show changes between the versions.

This guidance is expected to be useful for providers of imaging services, system suppliers and other stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the changes.

DIDS v2.0 System conformance checklist

The DIDS System Conformance Checklist is a tool to help care providers assess how well their local IT systems map to the DIDS v2.0 Technical Output Specification.

DIDS v2.0 Data Model

The DIDS v2.0 Data Model shows each of the data groups and data Items that will make up a submission.

DIDS v2.0 User Guidance

The DIDS v2.0 User Guidance provides more detailed guidance on how DIDS v2.0 should be interpreted by users, system suppliers and other stakeholders by providing information on each individual data group and its constituent data items.

Sensitive and legally restricted codes

As per the DIDS v2.0 Data Provision Notice, below is the list of restricted codes which must be anonymised at source prior to submission of DIDS v2.0 data to NHS England.

For these data, data providers must submit data for DIDS v2.0 with all patient identifiers removed (such as data items NHS NUMBER, PERSON BIRTH DATE and POSTCODE OF USUAL ADDRESS). This includes submitting a LOCAL PATIENT IDENTIFIER (EXTENDED) given this is a mandatory data item which is in the required format but is not an identifier for a patient.

The list above has been produced by filtering down relevant codes applicable for DIDS v2.0 from 2 exclusion lists published on the SNOMED CT Browser:

DIDS implementation webinars

A number of webinars are taking place to to support the implementation of DIDS v2.0.

We also ran a number of DIDS consultation webinars in 2024 for providers and submitters to explain and discuss the requirements we have gathered for DIDS version 2.0. The slides for each webinar are available to download.
