Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Enhanced Dataset: overview of 2024 consultation

Find out about the 2024 Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Enhanced Dataset consultation.

Introduction

During 2024 the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) commissioned NHS England to carry out a review of the Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Enhanced Dataset to ensure it was still fit for purpose, the information was provided in a simple and sensitive manner, and to improve the completeness and quality of the data.

Background

The FGM Enhanced Dataset (FGMED) collects data on FGM related attendances in healthcare settings, including acute hospitals, mental health services and GP practices. It supports the Department of Health and Social Care’s (DHSC) FGM Prevention Programme by presenting a greater understanding of the extent and issue of FGM identified by the NHS in England.

NHS England is commissioned by DHSC to collect data for the FGM Enhanced Dataset and publish quarterly official statistics reports.

Consultation proposals

The review of the dataset resulted in 6 proposals. The aim of these proposals was to focus on the information needed to support and develop FGM services and to reduce the data collection burden on healthcare providers whilst improving data quality.

The deadline for responses was 10th April 2024. You can view the consultation document below for details of these proposals.

Consultation results and recommendations

The proposals described above were considered by FGM-ED stakeholders. This paper summarises the review, provides details of the consultation and results and sets out recommendations and next steps.

Wider consultation on changes to statistical outputs

In addition to this consultation on changes to the FGM Enhanced Dataset, there was a wider consultation about possible changes to health and social care statistical outputs.

For the FGM publication, NHS England proposed to release quarterly data in the existing dashboard and open data CSV file, but without the commentary that is currently provided. The annual publication would remain unchanged under this proposal.

The deadline to provide your responses was 5 March 2024.
