Threat details
TripleM is distributed via spam emails that are usually crafted to appear as though they are invoices or other legitimate files sent by large companies such as Amazon, PayPal and FedEx.
When TripleM is executed it encrypts the content and filenames of the user's personal documents and media files. Some versions append the .MMM extension to affected filenames. TripleM uses different encryption keys for each individual file, and can encrypt files hosted on network shares. TripleM also removes recovery options, shadow copies and system restore points to disrupt attempts to recover data.
A ransom note is saved on the system demanding payment in bitcoin.
RemediationIf a device on your network becomes infected with ransomware it will begin encrypting local machine files and files on any network the logged-in user has permission to access. For system administration accounts this may include backup storage locations.
