Summary

A newly identified spyware tool called Nocturnal Stealer has been observed targeting popular browsers and cryptocurrency wallets.

Threat details

Nocturnal Stealer is delivered by an unidentified downloader and uses several common anti-analysis techniques including checking for emulation software and environment fingerprinting. Connection to a command and control (C2) server is made using the free service ip-api[.]com.

Once installed, Nocturnal Stealer will attempt to collect system information such as machine ID, operating system and device architecture before sending this to a C2 server. It will then analyse the available browser network traffic and collect the following information:

  • Credit and debit card information
  • Account credentials and passwords
  • FTP passwords
  • Search and keyboard histories
  • Cryptocurrency wallet details
