Keyloggers on HP devices

A keylogger has been found in the SynTP.sys driver which is found pre-installed on hundreds of HP laptop models. The Keylogger records every keystroke a user makes on their system and can create a log file, which is then used to compile all of the logged information.

Summary

A keylogger has been found in the SynTP.sys driver which is found pre-installed on hundreds of HP laptop models. The Keylogger records every keystroke a user makes on their system and can create a log file, which is then used to compile all of the logged information.

This log is disabled by default, however it can be enabled if Administrator rights are held by the user. If an attacker accesses the system and enables the Keylogger, they will have access to a wide range of sensitive information which could aid further malicious activities.

  • Ensure that your systems are patched with the latest security updates.
  • All day to day computer activities such as email and internet are performed using non-administrative accounts and that permissions are always assigned based on least privilege.
