Microsoft has announced that extended support for Windows 7 is coming to an end. There are two deadlines depending on the version of the operating system.

Threat details

  • Extended support for all Windows 7 versions ends on the 13th January 2020 – the operating system will no longer receive any updates or patches. This will risk the security of the system.
  • The additional security feature within Windows 7 Enterprise faces a reduction in support from the 31st July 2018 as Microsoft ends its additional zero-day protection offered by the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET).

Remediation steps

Type Step
Organisations should make plans to upgrade their Windows 7 operating systems to Windows 10. This will ensure that the security of the system will be maintained. Windows 10 contains additional features such as Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection and AppContainer sandboxing technology.
