Public Health England Advice for Healthcare Professionals Following Notification of an Infectious Disease

Acute Hepatitis C

Thank you for notifying Public Health England (PHE) of a confirmed or suspected case of acute hepatitis C. The following information makes recommendations for further case management and outlines the initial management that your local PHE health protection team will undertake

Suggested actions for healthcare professionals:

Please call your local health protection team urgently to discuss case management.
For probable cases that have not yet been laboratory confirmed, please arrange appropriate diagnostic tests.
Please refer the patient to a hepatologist, gastroenterologist or infectious disease physician for review.

Initial actions undertaken by your local PHE Health Protection team:

We will need to obtain a clinical history from you, along with information about risk factors including past history of blood transfusions, and medical or surgical procedures.
We will contact the patient to undertake a risk assessment, obtain details of contacts and advise on hepatitis C and how to prevent onwards transmission.
